SUSHIMAN - A NEW SUSHI PLACE AT KELAPA GADING WITH THEIR SIGNATURE DISH - LAVA SPECIAL ROLL

Kelapa Gading area is well known as a food paradise in Jakarta where you could find most type of cuisine here, especially at the boulevard road. However, we rarely visit the area due to the traffic, except only for certain food that is so good and bring us back, like Bumbu Den, 1001 Malam Seafood, Sari Sanjaya or 100 Bakut Teh.

But we may now found an addition to our list, a Japanese restaurant that was located at Jl. Gading Elok Utara Blok A No. 3D, SUSHIMAN. Recently opened on 1st of October, the restaurant offers open live sushi station, where you could see your sushi being prepared until it served to your table. The space is not so spacious, but due to the minimalis design it looks not so cramped. Beside that, the hanging icon of Sushiman with onigiri head enhance a friendly and casual dining environment.

Now let’s dig in, as for appetizer we choose Benoki, an enoki mushroom wrapped with bacon and braised in teriyaki sauce. Imagine, sweet dominant flavor from the teriyaki sauce and the distinctive flavor from enoki mushroom mix along with the smoky smell from the bacon, it just something you don’t wanna missed! Other appetizer that we choose was Samoki, deep fried salmon skin. Truly a great snack in becoming your companion while waiting for the main dish to come. Easy bite sized, light and crunchy.

BENOKI - IDR 48.000
SAMOKI - IDR 39.000
The one that we are waiting for is now came. Their house Specialty of Lava Special Roll, aburi (half broiled) with spicy salmon, kyuri, crunchy (tempura crumbs) and thick cut salmon in the middle. Served with spicy mayonnaise on top and then flamed by blow torch, to give a grill sensation. You don’t have to dip this in again to the soy sauce, as its already packed of flavor from the mayonnaise.

LAVA SPECIAL ROLL - IDR 49.000
Second to arrive, Descendants of the Sushi, deep fried bacon roll that stuff with quail’s egg, perilla leaf & melted mozzarella cheese. Perila leaf is sometime called shiso leaf, a herb of a mint family.  Even though the name was sushi, there was no single rice used in the dish. Understand that most of us afraid of eating quail’s egg due to the high risk of cholesterol, but I think it’s still okay to eat it once in a while, especially for this dish as the quail’s egg provide creamy texture while we eat the whole of it.

DESCENDANTS OF THE SUSHI - IDR 59.000
Spicy Salmon Hana, sushi rice top with spicy salmon wrapped with few slice of salmon and again, flamed by blowtorch. Personally, I think it was not too spicy since I have to add wasabi or togarashi (chili powder) but overall it was good.

SPICY SALMON HANA
Ma Ling Nigiri – For those who grew up from a Chinese family are definitely know this. It’s the first time for me finding out Ma Ling in sushi. Kinda weird but when I eat it, it just turned back childhood memories, as this ingredient is commonly used for home cooked since years of generation. Easily said, Ma Ling was the Chinese version of US SPAM.
MA LING NIGIRI - IDR 16.000
Tuna Onigiri 17k & Spicy Salmon Onigiri 10k Not commonly found in other Japanese restaurant here in Jakarta, here you could find few option of Onigiri, Tuna, Spicy Salmon & . We choose Tuna & Spicy Salmon. For the salmon, it was sushi rice mixed with shredded salmon, togarashi and cover by Nori with triangle shaped. For tuna, it more to plain sushi rice and tuna flakes in the middle.

SALMON NIGIRI - IDR 17.000

SPICY SALMON NIGIRI - IDR 10.000
Personal opinion: My favorite appetizer was the Benoki. Indeed, their house specialty was the best among all. Great casual Japanese restaurant in the food paradise of Kelapa Gading area.
